Adjective part III: Physical Appearance

Hello, how are things going with you? I hope everything runs well. Last week, you learned about adjective to describe personality traits. This time, you're going to learn another adjective to describe physical appearance.

Since there are so many words to describe  appearance, I'd like to group the vocabulary into some groups.

HAIR

Let's start from hair.

When you want to describe someone's hair, you can say:

She has long hair.

Her hair is curly

My mother's hair is straight.

FIGURE/ BUILD

Now, let's move to figure/ build

God created people in different figures. Even you and your siblings must have different figures.

Similar to how to describe someone's hair, this is how you do it.

My uncle is tall and skinny.

Her thin brother looks pale.

Angelina Jolie is plump. She's sexy.

EYES

Now, take a look at the list to describe eyes with adjective.

Most Indonesian people have almond-shaped eyes.

Asian people, especially Chinese people have oriental eyes.

My younger sister is near-sighted.

FACE

Face is the first thing people recognize from other people. It's easy to recognize people from their face. Be careful in using the language when describing about people. Some words sound rude to other people.

A: Do you remember Anne from our Elementary school?

B. Oh, the pretty girl from Class A? Of course I remember her.

A: Do you know that her sister is not as pretty as her? She's really plain.

B: Really? I can't believe it!

Note: Plain is the soft word to describe someone's look is not special. Don't say 'ugly' since it's considered rude.

Special Features

Sometimes, it's easy to recognize someone from his/ her special feature. Remember Pak Raden? You will always remember his mustache, right?

Special feature doesn't have a lot of adjective to use. Instead, it has more nouns to describe someone.

Rano Karno has a big mole on his cheek.

Adam Jordan has stunning dimples on his cheeks.

Remember the King of Dangdut? Yes, Rhoma Irama has sideburns near his ears.

Note:

If you want to describe someone's appearance, you can start from his face, his hair, eyes, and build/ figure. Special features can be added when necessary.

Well, that's all our discussion about how to describe someone's appearance. There are many other words to describe people, but the list I put here is the simplest way to describe someone.

See you on the next topic.
