Noun Agents: Grammar Enrichment

Setelah sebelumnya kita membahas seputar nouns, kali ini kita masih akan bermain-main dengan noun. Seperti yang kalian tahu, noun bisa berfungsi sebagai subject dan juga object dalam kalimat. Contohnya?

The reporter has been depending on online report these days.

As you can see, reporter adalah noun sementara report juga merupakan noun. Yang membedakan adalah noun functions as subject disebut sebagai agent atau doer, karena noun yang berupa orang yang melakukan, sementara report adalah hasil yang dikerjakan oleh reporter. Nah, jadi inilah yang akan kita bahas dalam diskusi kita kali ini.

Dalam membentuk noun sebagai agent, kita membutuhkan beberapa suffix yang bisa jadi berasal dari kata dasar kata kerja atau verb yang kemudian kita beri suffix atau akhiran sehingga membentuk noun as agent. Misalnya adalah: -er seperti dalam teacher, -or seperti dalam creator, -ist seperti dalam guitarist, -ian seperti dalam musician, dan -nt seperti dalam participant.

Saya akan letakkan dua noun dalam table berikut yang berfungsi sebagai agent dan non agent. Without further ado, let’s start from the first suffix:

Suffix noun with –ian:

Example:

The musician first composed their music from their personal life story.

The technician needs to update their knowledge about the current technique in modern devices.

Suffix noun with –ist:

Tourist	Tourism
Chemist	Chemistry
Artist	Art

Example:

Recently, some artists show their art using online gallery.

Students need to study science really hard in order to become a scientist.

Suffix noun with –nt:

Example:

The new residence is now full of newly-wed residents.

The participants don’t show their engaging participation due to the boring speaker.

Example:

They will have to put navigation markers out in the bay to the navigators in case of emergency.

The collector of the priceless collections would protect them with his life.

Suffix noun with –er:

Example:

I knew that the grocer has started his grocery business since he was young.

The report reported by the reporter should be delivered to the audience accurately.

Selain suffix yang sudah disebut tadi, ada beberapa nou agent yang tidak memiliki suffix. Kita bias menyebutnya sebagai irregular form of noun agent. Ini dia beberapa diantara daftar irregular noun agent:

Example:

The surgeon wears surgical mask before conducting surgery.

Yuk, kita coba latihan sederhana berikut ini:

She has received several awards for her research in engineer.
He had several critics to offer about the new play.
The famous acting has appeared in more than fifty Broadway plays.

I give you 5 seconds to think about the answer. Which ones are correct or incorrect.

OK, let’s discuss the exercise.

Number one is incorrect. What’s wrong with the sentence? Yup, the engineer there is not right. It should be engineering.

Number 2 is incorrect. Dalam Bahasa Indonesia kata kritik itu adalah kata benda, sementara orangnya disebut kritikus. Dalam Bahasa Inggris, critic adalah praktisi yang memberi kritik. Sementara kata benda critic adalah criticism. So, the answer should be: He had several criticisms bla bla bla.

Number three is incorrect. I think you already know why it’s wrong. The noun used there should be actor, not acting.

Bagaimana dengan penjelasan ini? Semoga cukup jelas buat kalian yang ingin mencoba menulis menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Kalian harus tahu bahwa mengetahui kelas kata atau part of speech itu sangat vital ketika kalian ingin menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris, terutama yang berhubungan dengan noun apakah itu noun agent atau non agent.
