Adjective Part II (Intermediate)
Last week, you learned about adjective that explains a noun from colors, sizes and textures. Today, you will learn another adjective derived from verbs (kata kerja).
Let me review about last week's lesson about adjective. The function of adjective is to modify a noun and sentence completion.
Adjective as a noun modifier
She wears blue jeans
They have a huge garden.
The soft fur of the cat really makes it cute.
Adjective as a sentence complementary
The blouse is blue
The street is narrow.
The skyscraper building is really tall.
Now, let's discuss about adjective derived from verb. First, you have to be able to differentiate between active and passive form.
Example:
The test is really frustrating (tesnya membuat frustrasi)
The film is very disappointing (filmnya sangat mengecewakan)
The interesting story of a novel attracts many readers (cerita yang menarik akan memikat banyak pembaca)
As you can see there, frustrating, disappointing, interesting are derived from verbs. You can put -ing after the verbs. The -ing form there forms the active adjective.
Others forms of active adjective are:
Interest Frustrate Disappoint Bore Tire Depress Terrify Amuse Frighten Fascinate Puzzle Excite Challenge Please Tempt |
Interesting Frustrating Disappointing Boring Tiring Depressing Terrifying Amusing Frightening Fascinating Puzzling Exciting Challenging Pleasing Tempting |
Well, there are many other active adjective forms you can look up in dictionary. Remember, -ing form in adjective shows active form. In Bahasa Indonesia, we call it as -me or membuat bla bla bla. Example: exciting (menyenangkan), frightening (menakutkan), amusing (menghibur), etc.
Now, let's move on to passive adjective. Look at the example:
The long trip made the kids tired. ( Piknik panjang itu membuat anak-anak lelah)
The fascinated audience of a circus asked for more shows of attractions. (Para penonton terpana melihat aksi sirkus itu dan meminta tampil lagi).
She feels terrified after watching the ghost movie. (Dia merasa takut setelah menonton film hantu).
As you can see in the example, fascinate, tired, terrified are derived from verbs. The -ed form or verb 3 forms form passive adjective.
Other forms of passive adjective
Interest Frustrate Disappoint Bore Tire Depress Terrify Amuse Frighten Fascinate Puzzle Excite Challenge Please Tempt |
Interested Frustrated Disappointed Bored Tired Depressed Terrified Amused Frightened Fascinated Puzzled Excited Challenged Pleased Tempted |
Well, there are many other passive adjective forms you can look up in dictionary. Remember, -ed form in adjective shows passive form. In Bahasa Indonesia, we call it as di- or ter-. Example: fascinated (terpana/ kagum), puzzled (bingung), amused (terhibur), interested (tertarik), etc.
Now, it’s time for you to have your exercise. Good luck!
